Palliative care may be able to help when coping with a serious illness.

  • Cancer
  • Cardiac Disease
  • Respiratory disease
  • Kidney failure
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • ALS
  • Multiple sclerosis

These and other conditions — and the treatments for them — can be difficult for you and your family. Palliative care and Hospice & Community Care’s Palliative Medicine Consultants may be able to help.

What is palliative care?

Palliative care provides relief from the pain, symptoms and stress of serious illnesses. Palliative Medicine Consultants work with your doctors to treat symptoms, maintain function and help you reach your goals.

How can palliative care help?

  • Pain management
  • Symptom control including: breathing difficulty, weakness, fatigue, nausea, bowel and bladder problems, anxiety, depression and insomnia.
  • Education about your illness
  • Help in making healthcare decisions
  • Provide practical information and assistance for you and your caregiver

When can palliative care help?

Palliative care can be started at home, in a senior living facility or in the hospital. We will work with your doctor to design a treatment plan, monitor your progress and make changes as needed to provide ongoing relief and support. Palliative care is often provided at the same time as other treatments (such as chemotherapy or radiation).

How can I get palliative care?

To have a consultation with a palliative care physician, ask your doctor for a referral or call us at (717) 735-3131. Care is available for patients of all ages. Medicare or insurance plans usually cover palliative care, however, if you are without coverage, care is still available.

"Thank you for caring for my husband and allowing me to have him at home for a few days. Your compassion, ability to make him comfortable, concern for me and availability at any time was gratefully appreciated. You are special people and I will never forget the comfort you brought to both of us."

"It's difficult to find words to express my appreciation for your care for my mother during the last year. You were able to assist her through her journey with cancer and her end of life. She was treated with compassion and respect, and she remained almost pain free which was almost miraculous. Thank you all, for those who made decisions for her comfort, those who listened and talked, and prayed with her."
